Eissa Al-Safran is a professor of petroleum engineering (PE) and the former vice dean for research and academic affairs at the College of Engineering and Petroleum at Kuwait University. Al-Safran is currently an adjunct professor of PE at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT). Al-Safran was a visiting professor at the Nuclear Science and Engineering Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he taught a graduate course and co-supervised PhD students. He was also a visiting research professor at the PE departments at the University of Tulsa (TU) and NMT. Al-Safran is the founder and director of the Kuwait University Petroleum Production Int. Collaborative Research Program and co-founder and associate director of the NMT Production and Drilling research consortium. He earned a BSc. (1995), MSc. (1999), and Ph.D. (2003) degrees in PE, and an MSc. degree in mathematics and science education (2003), all from TU. Al-Safran worked as a reservoir engineer and production engineering consultant at Kuwait Oil Company. He is the co-author of the SPE book Applied Multiphase Flow in Pipes and Flow Assurance-Oil and Gas Production and has authored and co-authored more than 120 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications in oil and gas production, multiphase flow in pipes, and flow assurance.
Al-Safran is serving on the international technical advisory committee of the Multiphase Production Technology Conference series, and the editorial board of the J. of Geoenergy Sci. and Eng (formerly known as J. of Petroleum Sci. and Eng). Al-Safran received the regional Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) 2017 Distinguished Achievement for Petroleum Engineering Faculty Award, the regional SPE 2019 Production and Operations Award, the international SPE 2020 Distinguished Membership Award, the regional SPE 2021 Service Award, the international SPE 2022 Production and Operations Award, and the international SPE 2023 Distinguished Services Award. In addition, he received the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) 2016 Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Award, TU Thomas C. Frick Outstanding Academic Achievements Award, and other awards. Al-Safran is the SPE KU student chapter faculty advisor, SPE Middle East Advisory Council member, SPE E4Me program ambassador, SPE League of Volunteers member, and a former SPE Kuwait section board member. He served on several SPE committees and events, and he is a member of SPE, ASME, ASA, and ASEE.
